Pancake Day

Filed Under (Special Days, UK) by Conchi on 24-02-2009 and tagged , , ,

Today is ShroveTuesday (Martes de Carnaval) and in the UK (Reino Unido) it is traditional to eat pancakes (filloas), because of this it is also called Pancake Day.

On this day it is also popular to take part in Pancake Races. This tradition began in an English town called Olney in 1445. A woman was making pancakes in her home when she heard the church bells, she ran to the church with the fyring pan in her hand. From then on, the race is held  every year in Olney and in many UK towns. The contestants have to toss the pancake three time as they run. The winner is the first to reach the finish line with the pancake intact. It’s great fun!

Dende entón a carreira faise  todolos anos en Olney e tamén en moitos pobos do Reino Unido.
